Story 26DX/L010
Story from 26DX/L010 activity.26DX/L003 went QRT at 12:03utc, 3 el yagi and mast was dismantled, by 12:20utc we were carrying the equipment on Little Sawley. I'd just connected the iCOM iC706 to the battery, Bill and Sean was assembling the antenna when suddenly a guy walking from around the little building on the island, this guy turned out to be the Island proprietor and met us with the words " OFF, THIS ISLAND IS PRIVATE, I WANT YOU OFF NOW ! ", ( now we'd briefly meet this guy a couple of hours before while we were active from L-003, he walked past us with I think his wife walking their dog, he stopped briefly to say good morning and showed a little interest in what we were doing). He went on to mention that he didn't mind us being on the large island, but no way could we operate from the tiny island, he went on to mention that he gets a lot of fishermen trying to use the island, he said if he started letting one person on, it would soon get around and the island would be full of trespassers. I tried to explain what our intentions were but he just kept saying " NO, sorry you have to leave ". Once the guy had said his peace, I agreed with him, " no problem mate, totally understand, if you want us off, we'll go ", I went on to mention that I'd sms'd a few friends and they were waiting for us on the radio, I went on to say it would only take us 30 minutes to work them, I asked him if he'd give us just 30 minutes and we'd be off, he replied with " 15 MINUTES, YOU'VE GOT 15 MINUTES THEN I WANT YOU OFF ", we thanked him, Bill and Sean ran back to the half assembled antenna, I quickly started to collect proofs, pics, GPS, video footage etc, I phoned John 101 and explained that we might only be on air for a few minutes, John distributed the info that if anyone wanted to work us that they'd have to be quick. Bill had a problem fixing our mast to the pole which was fixed to the little building, the pole was slightly thicker than our 2 inch clamps, the swivel clamps wouldn't go around the pole, Bill had to force the two clamps on with brute force which was very noisy, I expected the island owner to return to see what all the noise was, anyway Bill finally got the clamps on and within a couple of minutes the 3 el yagi was up in the air. At 12:36 utc 26DX/L010 Little Sawley island was on air, the 15 minutes we had agreed upon would mean we had to leave at 12:45 utc ! After our initial contact with John, we were meet with a quiet frequency, but once the first cluster.dk spot was sent all hell broke loose and we had many friends calling us, in hindsight I probably should have gone split. Time flew and it wasn't long before we'd over stayed our welcome, after about 20 minutes I went to find the island owner to ask him to see if he would extend our time, I wasted 5 minutes trying to find him, so I went back to radio and carried on, Bill managed to find him and he returned back to where I was operating, I thanked him for letting us stay on the island, he could hear many stations still calling us, he said we could have another 10 minutes then we really had to be off, " CQ CQ this is 26DX/L010 QRZ !! ". 13:10 utc L010 went QRT, we probably could have carried on for a few minutes more, but the guy had been decent enough to give us some time on the island, he'd extended that time, we felt it was only right to honour what we'd agreed. I started to put away all the radio stuff, while Bill helped by Sean dealt with the antenna and mast, just before leaving, I found the island owner and thanked him for letting us activate Little Sawley. In total 50 stations were logged in just 30 mins. Thanks to all which called in, activating L010 was great fun, fun while it lasted. 73 de.. Darran, Bill and Sean return |
