Story 26DX/N-001
Story from 26DX/N-001 activity.Another short notice iWi, apologies that it wasn't announced sooner, propagation had been really good the day before, so Sean and I thought we'd try our luck and put N-001 on the air. Drive time to the island was around 45 - 50 mins, we set off early so traffic wasn't a problem, I'd already visited the area the week previous, so the txing site had already been chosen, this was in a corner of a farmers field about 150 meters from Kelham bridge which searches over the river Trent. Once we'd arrived, Sean once again had the Bamby assembled in super quick time while I set up the radio and connected it to the 100aH leisure battery. In case of any problems, I always like to collect necessary proofs before I key the mic, this way I have proofs on my camera in case I have to leave the island at short notice, within 20 minutes of arriving there 26DX/N-001 was on air, 26D193 Ryan was first in the log at 08:07 utc. Band conditions weren't brilliant, but stations were worked with strong signals, it was still early, so we were hoping the usual island hunters would wake up from their slumber and give us a call. After two and a half hours on constantly calling, it was apparent the band was in no way near the shape it was the day before, suddenly the band was totally silent, after a few minutes we decided to visit the market town of Newark on Trent, I wanted to purchase some postcards and hopefully find somewhere to have a bit to eat. In the adjacent field, the grass was overgrown, so I decided to lay the Bamby down in there and hope that the farm or the occasional walker wouldn't find it, so we dismantled the coax, walked about 20 meters in the field and hide the antenna the best we could, then we proceeded to make our way into town. Within 5 minutes drive we were stuck in traffic on the outskirts of Newark on Trent when my mobile phone started to ring, I looked at the number which I didn't recognise and answered the call, to my surprise on the other end of the phone was 161SD102 Darek, he'd been given my mobile number from a friend and wanted to know if I was still active, I told him we were qrx for an hour, we had a short but pleasant chat and we arranged to be on freq in one hour, thanks for the call Darek ! I managed to find some postcards which had the same church which I had took picture of from the tx location, I'd found out it was called the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, we used this landmark to prove we were in that area. After a search for a quick bite to eat, parking was a nightmare, so we decided to drive back to the island and see if the band had improved. Once we'd reconnected the Bamby initial thoughts were the band looking in pretty good shape, but within about 20 or so contacts my constant CQ's were met by silence. Just like our previous 2 iWi activities, we were visited by the land owner, he turned out to be a very friendly guy which knew a little bit about what we were doing, he went on to mention that he once had a CB in one of his vehicles, he asked what we had worked, while I flicked through the log 13OT001 Mario called on .555 and QSY'd to .577, I know Mario is an avid island chaser, so I QSY' up and surprised Mario, the land owner chatted for about 10 - 15 minutes, he mentioned that we could use the field whenever we wanted which was nice of him. It was obvious the propagation was against us, after another 2.5 hours of calling with very few takers, we decided to call it a day, at time of writing this I haven't converted the paper log to PC, but I'd guess the amount of friends logged is around 80, I'd hoped for more, but it could have been worse, so can't really complain. As always thanks to those which called in, also thanks for those which were unlucky due to bad propagation. See you from the next island. 73 from Team: 26DX047 Darran and son Sean return |
