Story 26DX/N010
Story from 26DX/N010 activity. We had planned to activate an island two days previous, but on that particular Saturday morning, the band was dead, so we decided to wait a day or two, Monday the 2nd of August arrived and on this morning the band was heaving, so we decided to activate Redhill island. This small inland water island is located in the county of Nottinghamshire on the North section of the river Soar, this iWi is in close proximity to two islands which Sean and I had activated before, these were Cranfleet D-003 and Ratcliffe L-001. Once the info was uploaded to the DXRC site, emails were sent to various forums and activation info uploaded to cluster.dk, the 30 minute journey to the island begun. We arrive at the island at 09:36 utc, a location was quickly choose and with a few minutes equipment was set up and the first station was logged at 09:56 utc ( hi JP 14AT014 ). Band was still in pretty decent shape, stations were logged at a steady flow, but after a while propagation started to disappear, between 12:00 and 14:45utc only 10 stations were logged within that period, we decided to pack away the Bamby, drive home with intentions of returning to the island later, this of course all depended on the propagation. Just as we were thinking of going qrt, at 14:23 utc we had a visit from the island owner, he asked us what we were doing as the land was private, I explained that we had been on the island most of the day and had chatted to a few of the boat owners which had their boats moored on the island, I told him we'd wanted a quiet morning out with our little radio, he was a very friendly guy, he was happy to let us stay longer as long as we kept the noise down and the paying customers ( boat owners ) were happy. We arrived home and had a nice meal which my XYL had prepared, I can't remember exact times, but within 90 minutes the band was open with Poland, Germany and Denmark, so it was all go for the evening session on the island. It must have been approx 17:10 utc +/- when we set off on our return journey to the island, 30 minutes drive, 10 mins setting up equipment, first call on the evening session was met with a nice healthy pileup, 1st logged that evening was 161AT080 Jarek, followed by my good friends MaC 161DX016, 47DX132 Carsten, 161EX016 Mariusz, 161SD051 Luk, 47DX142 John, 21DX116 Chris, 21DX014 Loic, list of friends go on and on, so just for this first pileup of friends, we were more than happy that we returned to the island. We had a pleasant evening with good band conditions, the only thing not in our favour was daylight, it started to disappear fast, towards the end we were operating in near darkness, we had to make the hard decision to go qrt, by the time we'd dismantled the Bamby, we had total darkness, we'd timed it just about right. I'd like to close by mentioned proofs for this activation, it is important when an activation is divided into multiple parts that proofs are provided for each part, because I'd returned to the island within a couple of hours, I'd parked in the exact same spot, the antenna was tied to the same post, everything was exactly the same, so it would have been useless to show more pictures ( even though I did and have ), I decided to use video footage of QSO's, time of contacts, clock at side of radio, then towards the end loosing daylight was hopefully all the proof I needed. Also big thanks to 13/26AT114 Paul, in our QSO he mentioned the time, date etc, this was all videoed, this QSO will also be used has additional proof when 26DX/N010 is assessed and validated by the DXRC Validation Team. Ok, thanks to all that called in, just as much thanks to those which listened in but didn't manage to work us, hopefully you'll have better luck from our next iWi. 73 de..26DX047 Darran & Sean return |
