Story 304DX/EU178/M
Story from 304DX/EU178/M activity.Hi IOTA hunters, Big event like Original Island Festival it means that we ( 161DX037 Greg and myself ) can not stay at home. Our choice for this year is Estonia with EU-178 Manilaid island – new one on 11mts band. To achieve our target we had to start day earlier – early morning. As we planned we did. I started trip from my home city before 6:00am, after 1 hour we continued trip together with Greg- 2 cars fully loaded with cables, antennas, power generator, petrol etc. During trip we took decision to stay in Latvia on 2 new ones IWI’s: 311DX / ZI Zakusala Island 311DX / LI Lucavsala Island With LI & ZI done, the next day early morning we still had around 350kms to achieve our island. Around noon harbor where was waiting according to schedule Ulle with his fishing boats. After 10 minutes on the sea Manilaid island was achieved and after next 15 minutes we had occasion to unload whole equipment. Location very good, enough space for antenna and radio. As always we started from antenna, after a few minutes radio was turned on and 1st QSO’s in our paper log. Only paper log due the reason of so many equipment to handle in the harbour and during whole trip. Short warm up and around 40 stations in our log- we were fully prepared to next day event. After short tour we decided to take small boat and visit with handheld radio another island- Annilaid- EU-178 too. During our stay, called issued was 304DX/EU178/M, using dipole antenna we made over 30 QSO’s. Back trip was little difficult due the reason of little high waves on the Baltic sea. 4th of June, festival was start. We started as always before 4:00GMT, after few minutes 1st stations in our log- big surprise because on the same frequency another IOTA station started activation. It is difficult to find new frequency without contact with the internet. Big chaos occurred because a lot of calls to two stations on the same frequency. Fortunately our colleagues changed frequency and was possible to continue in more quiet atmosphere our activation. First day not bad- around 300 stations in the log – much worse result if we compare to previous year result. We finished around 23:00 GMT. Next day, Sunday Greg switched on radio but only zzzz on band. It was big surprise, whole day with almoust zero of propagation.Only few strongest stations were logged. Finally 346 stations in our log – only 464 stations. In the meantime we found time for testing local fishes prepared by owners of our location. Very good location, very good hospitality, we are thinking to go once again to this region. Time to start to think about our next year destination. Thanks a lot for logged and not logged- next time will be better. Best regards, Greg & Slawek return |
