Story 30DX/EU078

Story from 30DX/EU078 activity held during August 2007.

Hello DXers
I am back home.

The Medas Islands are a Natural Park on the North East coast of Spain, near the village of L'Estartit, in the province of Girona. A permission is needed to stay overnight on the island. The Medas group contains 7 uninhabited islands. Meda Grande is the main and biggest island and it has got a lighthouse on top.

The island is high and there is a narrow rocky and steep path from the small jetty to the top of it. The hiking can take 10 minutes if you are fit. And you must be in real good shape to bring any equipment up there, such as a battery, antenna and radio. For this reason the main camp was placed at the jetty, but there was a big wall which made really difficult any contacts from North to East. I had to climb to the top with the equipment if I wanted to make any contacts at all. And so I did.

Once at the top, it was rather hard to find a place to stay and to set up the antenna as there were bushes everywhere, and the wind of the North was strong. When the station was ready I realized I was not alone there…the island was full of rats and fleas, and of course hundreds of seagulls too.

But the worst came at night, when a few black beetles and thousands of rats wanted to eat our dinner while we were sleeping…some lucky ones in a camping tent, and some others not so lucky outside in the stars of the night…guess who?, others couldn't sleep at all and they were trying to keep the rats away.

About the activity, propagation was not really good, but I tried to work as fast as possible to try to log many stations when the skip was open. The 75AH car battery lasted all two days without problem, pushing 50W. In the end 213 stations in the log.

And we must thank the Generalitat de Catalunya for their kindness and support on this project offering us the boat trip to/from the island.
