Story 47DX/LI
Story from 47DX/LI activity.47DX/LI Lilleoe island (Lilleø). Lilleoe island is a small island , around 500 x 100 meters in size. The island is uninhabited; there is a small shelter, no harbour, no electricity and no fresh water. The only access is via a private boat. The waters around Lilleoe island is quite shallow. Towards west the dept is around 15-40 cm for around 1 km or more, towards north and south its shallow – 15-50 cm for more than 100 meters and to the east there is a small and very narrow isthmus (a narrow stripe of land) typically 0,5 – 1 meters wide for almost all 800 meters over to Taeroe island (SJ-024). On Taeroe island around 20 wild horses are living, and via the thin strip of land they can access Lilleoe island, so with hundreds of seagulls present at Lilleoe island its not really fair to say its uninhabited – well, it is but only for humans. With the experience from my SJ-024 activation the other day in mind, I packed all needed equipment and drove to Bogoe islands north side where the distance to Lilleos island is approx. 1.500 meters. Wind was mild from North West, temperature was 22, so all should be fine. I came to Lilleoes south-east tip and noticed that the only trees on the island are at the north eastern part of the island. Trees are good to hold the antenna pole… I decided to stay in the boat at sail nearer the trees. But crossing the shallow waters west of Lilleoe island could not be done with petrol horsepower’s (=boat engine). In other words: I had to leave the boat and pull the boat the 500 meters west around of the island. Finally, an hour later than expected I went on shore and gladly noticed a small building/shelter just 20 meters from the water, a perfect place to set up the station and several trees. I quickly took some photos for proofs, inclusive the photos of the GPS and then I made my first CQ. No one replied – Propagation was gone!! After some more CQ’s I worked 47DX132 Carsten and 47DX054 Leif – both via groundwave. After 30 minutes of waiting – patiently - I worked the first skip station: 14SD035. Propagation slowly rose and more stations were logged. 40 minutes later I look over my shoulder and noticed something bad: Very dark grey clouds! Thunder clouds. 37 stations were logged and I spend around 40 minutes working stations. But I would not take any chances since sitting in a boat on open sea in a thunderstorm would be very dangerous. To wait 2-3 hours was not an option since it would not be possible for me to leave Lilleoe island when the light was gone. Therefore I had to pack all equipment quickly and leave Lilleoe island – without wasting any time. The clouds came nearer and nearer but no thunder was heard. When back on Bogoe island I could see that the weather cleared up and the dark skies disappeared. Lilleoe island was still out there, ready for another “go” soon. 47DX002 Soren. return |
