Story 19DX/GR011

Story from 19DX/GR011 activity.

The Island Festival is a activity which we enjoy and look forward to !

This year the preparation and location were great !
We had a abandoned mast available which was already situated on the island. With 3 motivated team members we began to plan and looked forward to the fun lying ahead.

The week before, It became clear that I couldn’t join the team on Friday early. A meeting in Antwerp would be the cause, that I could only be there around 0100 local time.
All materials were taken with us. Vincent and Dimitri would “setup” the equipment while I attended the meeting. On my way back…a disaster happened.

Over the telephone I was notified that: due to circumstances they couldn’t setup the station…and it got worse…they were on the way back….I honestly thought at first.. they were joking…..
But it wasn’t a joke, circumstances sometimes are not in our favour and the plan we all had been looking forward to….went down the drain.

With about 2..3 hours driving left I still couldn’t believe it, but knew it was true. At about 0200 local time I arrived at the location. There was still materials which I picked up…
With sadly 2 team members gone (believe me…they were devastated ) I still had the backup station in my car…but….no power supply….
I decided to spend the night around that area as I already had been driving for about 12hrs that day. And went home in the early morning to pick up a battery.
With the battery and the back-up station I went walking to our back-up island…Although the distance from the parking lot was not long…those who saw me walking saw a broken man…. I truly couldn’t be excited.
But I needed to activate something, as we had been looking so forward for this, as there were so many teams who did their upmost, as I know we weren’t the only one with “issues”.
My mind went on to those hunters ….guys who already were searching for “us”….terrible…

Thankfully the back-up station performed as it should. Some well known “hunters” could be logged even though the propagation was not working along….but hey…we already expected that hihi.
After a while the battery indicated it was on low energy, the battery wasn’t the only thing on low energy…so was I….we did our upmost…but sometimes…things beyond your personal control will cause issues.

Although it wasn’t the experience we were hoping for, the experience was valued.
Afterall….to have fun and to be “pleased” you need to know the downside as well.

A strange….but maybe needed experience….with still some proud feeling that even in worst case scenarios we can still “catch” some hunters !

On behalf of us : Hunters, activators, Island festival team ….Thank you ! We will be back next year !
