Story 26DX/N033

Story from 26DX/N033 activity.

26DX/ iWi MINI TOUR

After an invitation from friends for a short break in the east of England, I decided to look at the chances of activating a couple of inland islands.

Easy access and little planning was essential, so with the help of Google Earth and Mr Darran 047 at DXRC website HQ, I finally came up with a group of 3 islands to do.

All of the islands were accessible by road and were within 10km of by holiday base, although I had not been to check them prior to activation.

Oundle Island N-032 was first up and although the access road was closed for roadwork’s, I managed to sneak in and park up without anyone taking notice. Running on the mobile antenna for a while, log entries where slow but steady, I then put the A99 antenna up and things improved a little. Although lacking some of the adventure element of an IOTA activation, I really did enjoy my first iWi experience.

Next up was Denford Island N-031. On arrival here I found the entrance to the island locked. A quick change of plan had me heading to Woodford Island N-030, just a few km away. This was a tiny island and I was a little worried that the people would complain when a big blue van drove onto the island. Nobody said a thing so I just carried on with setting up the antenna. It was a very picturesque place with the canal, lock, barges and wildlife. It seemed a crime to disturb it all. But DX rules.

Last Island was Cotterstock N-033, where conditions were terrible and the heat was incredible. 29deg and the amplifier heat made things uncomfortable, but again the scenery was beautiful. I met and spoke to a local fisherman who was so funny.

I really enjoyed my first venture into iWi activations and intend to continue with them as and when the opportunity arises. Watch this space for more to come.

Thanks to all for help and advice, 26DX047, 26AT015 and family and 47DX052 for another nice card and great service. Oops don’t forget the wife Pauline, who let me sneak off on my own while on holiday.
