Story 47DX/NI

Story from 47DX/NI activity.

Nyholm Island, Holmen islets.

I had a visit at “Holmen” – the Danish Naval Base at Nyholm Island, Holmen islets.

After that meeting I had 4-5 hours I could invest in an activity from the island. Today Holmen consist of 5 or 6 islands, and I visited the most northern of them (Nyholm Island). The islands are all man made from several hundreds years ago and was made to host the Danish navy – the ships back then was actually produced around these islands.

Today this one island is still military area and used only by the military. Access by car is not allowed unless you have a good reason.

Gladly, I had a good reason, so I went up north to the North-western tip of the island – a peninsula – which I had decided would be perfect for activation: water to 3 sides and also a quiet place – I thought...!! Upon arrival I learned that the frigate (warship) “Peder Skram” uses this peninsula and was “parked” here, just south of the peninsula.

Not believing it would be a good site for TX, 15 meters away from a 25 meters high iron-made warship, I moved approx. 250 meters south and found another good spot, totally open to south and west, and a fine place to mount the antenna pole.

The place was next to the U-boat “Sælen”, not in service any longer and now on land as an exhibition U-boat.

Antenna raised, photo’s taken for proofs, and back to radio, just to learn that there was not much propagation. The first 2 stations logged were 136FR101 Patrice and 3DA012 Roger – then a log break without any stations heard.

To avoid local QRM I worked a few of the contacts in split mode, this worked well.

After 10 stations logged and one hour gone, I decided to find some lunch, so I left the antenna behind – took a few more pictures and headed off.

Coming back after lunch, and still just few ones to work made me decide to raise the antenna extra 3 meters, so top of antenna went up to 13 meters. I don't know if it helped or not, but after I raised the antenna I worked 47DX054 and 47DX088, approx. 120 km’s away.

Still just few bursts-QSO’s, among them 19DX056 and 108AT031, made me decide to stop around 15:00 GMT.

As a conclusion I experienced too few stations in log, but gladly some of the most eager radio friends now have worked Nyholm island. QSL via DXRC-Bureau.

I will consider going back to Holmen islets during e-skip season and then activating one of the other islands of the islets – and maybe give Nyholm a little extra time if propagation is good so all gets a fair chance to have Nyholm Island confirmed.

Thanks to all who listened for me, I hope for better props next time.

Greetings

Soren 47DX002
