Story 47DX/SJ026 Nyord 2012

Story of 47DX/SJ026 Nyord island 2012

Facts about Nyord island:
We find Nyord island in South East Denmark, between Sealand island and Moen island.
The island is approx. 5 km2 in size with one small village where approx. 40 people lives.
1/3 of the island is a bird sanctuary and the island host many rare bird species.

The Story:
This year's first activation for me should have been during the WWRO Original Island Festival. But Sunday (4/6) propagation was awful so I decided to postpone my activation. Well, the week after propagation was again great so I decided to go…
On way to Nyord I pass several islands: Falster, Faroe, Bogoe, Bogoe Faeste, and Moen islands - I was listening on the radio and had a few contacts while driving.
Approx. 5 km's before the Bridge to Nyord I heard 107DE006 Eric. 107 division (Monaco) is not an easy one to catch from Denmark and as far as I remember, I haven't had contact with 107 for more than 10 years. Eric was in QSO with a dude from England, but their QSO ended the second I left Moen island and came on to the bridge to Nyord. The Bridge is a narrow one-way bridge, approx. 200 meters long.
Signals were not too good, but at the middle of the bridge Eric's signal got stronger so I stopped the car at the bridge and finalized the QSO over the narrow waters between Moen and Nyord islands. It was a short QSO as a car came up behind…

Arrived at Nyord (the Bird Watch Tower) I could see that I was not alone. Last time I was here - in 2010 - I was here alone and I could mount the antenna in the top of the 10 meters high tower.
But today there was about 25-30 people present… I quickly noticed that they all looked the same direction: And in the sky a huge Sea Eagle was seen.

I decided not to mount the antenna in the tower, instead I used the usual "mast up against a tree"-way, due to very strong propagation it was no problem to have the Bamby in 10 meters of height instead of 20 meters.

I made my proofs (pictures) and began my activation.

One call on 555 and I began my activation logging 26OP172… Time flew, and some hours later I stopped (last station logged: 34RC024). I quickly disassembled the station and drove home to see Italy against Spain on Football (European championship).

I had a great time and I enjoyed my first activation for this season.
